About Vinilo Southampton

Give us the background... when and why did you decide to open your store Vinilo Record Store?

We have both previously worked in the music industry, Ken as a drummer with Thomas Tantrum and Virginia as a tour manager for Big Life. Also, Ken had worked at Essential Music an independent music store in Southampton for years. We both wanted a space in our city to go and enjoy buying records from, after many long car journeys discussing the plan, we went for it! Vinilo Record Store opened in August 2017 and Southampton has fallen in love with records again. Oh and we're a micro vegan coffee bar too.

We mainly have a younger audience, and we champion new music, indie exclusives and upcoming bands. To the left of the mainstream is where we sit in what we like and play, with a sprinkle of pop! We love Hip Hop, Electronica, Indie Alt Rock / Pop.

Our staff are in the music industry, Dean Paul is guitar player for Sean McGowan and Sam Ford is the editor of So Young Magazine. We love all of our customers and its amazing to hang out with them on a daily basis and hear all their stories! Stories like when Jordan shook Tyler the Creators hand on his first visit back to London, or when Steve went for dinner with George Harrison in his Miami home.

The first record sold was The Kinks / You really got me 7”
The last record sold (whilst writing this) was Sports Team / Fishing 7”

I don't remember the first record shop, but everything changed once I (Ken) started working in Essential Music in my late teens, with my mate Jamie Reynolds (pre-Klaxons). My mind was blown open to new music daily! Once you're hooked, you're hooked!
First album was Verve / A Storm in Heaven from Our Price in Bournemouth
First 7” was Menswe@r / I’ll manage somehow

One of our favourites is REC Bangcock, love the vibe they have. They have a great sense of athletic style mixing coffee & records.

RSD 2018 was a mega day! Our store’s first RSD

We can't just say one, but Bowie at Glastonbury in 2000 was epic, and Slowthai playing an album launch for us at Heartbreakers for 100 people earlier this year was equally awesome!
