About Phoenix Sounds
Phoenix Sounds is the largest independent music store in the southwest outside of Bristol and has been a well-loved fixture in Newton Abbot for 18 years.
Myself (Roger) and my partner Marsha took over the running of the shop from Will in July 2022 after a chance conversation one day in the store (buying vinyl of course!) and have not looked back since.
Both of us live in Newton Abbot, are avid music fans, vinyl collectors and have a wealth of music knowledge. We understand that ‘music is what feelings sound like’ and we will continue to provide this amazing community with information, inspiration and entertainment.
We are helped in the store by Jackie and Charlie, both know a lot about music which they are happy to share with the customers. Jackie’s passion is Reggae, Ska and 2tone, with a bit of Jungle and Drum & Bass thrown in for good measure. Charlie loves things late 60’s and Psych together with more contemporary music. I am a great Depeche Mode, Simple Minds and 80’s music fan, whilst Marsha loves James, The The and Lenny Kravitz.
There’s always a fun atmosphere in the store with a variety of music playing and customers are welcome to come in and have a chat. Our music tastes are expanding with the varied genres loved by the local community who come in and tell us their stories of music bought and gigs attended.
We stock a wide range of CDs together with new and second-hand vinyl to suit all tastes. What we don’t have in stock, we can find for you.
We have great plans for music promotions and giveaways, so keep following us on our newsletter or social media pages and join in the chat. Our website is constantly being updated with new releases, exclusives and Record Store Day issues
Honestly I can’t, but I feel a huge sense of privilege to be able to serve the local community with their music, honoured even.
2023 will be our first year running Record Store Day at Phoenix Sounds. Still, in the last few years, we have been in the queue early in the morning exchanging vinyl stories with the other customers (what a great experience that was,) or helping the previous owner with the teas and coffees!
We have learnt what our customers need from experience, which we hope to deliver in 2023!
Roger: If I don’t say Coldplay, I’m in deep trouble but I have to say Erasure Moscow to Mars Secret Gig
Marsha: Coldplay this summer (2022) – a real party atmosphere and where Roger and I got engaged!
Jackie: The Prodigy, I had to ring my socks out when I got home ...It was banging
Charlie: Frank Turner
We are looking forward to seeing you in-store or joining our social communities!
